In Japan they run the iPhone ad on TV showing how cool Around Me is. Of course after seeing the ad twice, I decided to download around me app using my iPhone.
The download went smooth and a touch slower as seen in the TV ad. Would like to have the same speed on my WiFi connection. Click on the icon to start AroundMe and a menu or list is showing 15 categories to choose from plus one Favorites and one for Apple retail stores, but later is not a category.
AroundMe needs to be able to access the location feature of iPhone to make any half way good suggestions. iPod touch owners might have a problem to make good use of the app, but it might work fair with a WiFi connection. Would like to know if it’s true.
To get any suggestion the app needs to have Internet connection. Once AroundMe pinpoint the location and one category has been selected it display what it found in text and with the apriximate distance from the current location. So better it was to pinpoint so more accurate it’s suggestion will be.
From the list one can choose the place and get further information. Around Me can send the info via email, show it in map, add to contact or show the direction from the current location in map.
If you don’t mind that an app is connecting online to gather the information, and AroundMe is doing it using Google.
Testing it myself I got mixed results. Very often AroundMe was not able to really pin point my current position accurate enough and other times the shown results where not impressive.
A good laugh was the search for Apple retail store. The closes was 400m away, which was about right and the other has been 6000 km away. Yes no printing mistake over 6000 km and it would take 20 days by car to get there.
The app is multi-lingual, if you wouldn’t guess it yet.
