I’m going to the UK and I want to use my iPhone without the phone function to avoid any roaming charges. The iphone would be as an iPod touch, but how do I do it or is it not possible, is there a way to keep the phone off but leave the other functions on?

ANSWER:
Yes, you can.
On your iPhone got to “Settings” –> “Airplane Mode” –> ON  and confirm it.

When Airplane Mode is on, your phone is off, but also your WiFi.
To get your WiFi back, just go to “Settings” –> “Wi-Fi” –> ON

If you haven’t done so already. Apple suggest, and you can read it on your iphone under
“Settings” –> “General” –> “Network”

“Turn data roaming off when abroad to avoid substatial roaming charges when using email, web browsing, and other data services.”

Please do so by changing the setting for “Data Roaming” from “On” to “Off”.

Now you are set and should be save as well.

While you are in England, you might want WiFi. Some McDonalds and Starbucks places offer free WiFi and there should be some more free WiFi points. This way you can stay in touch, do a search, or what ever you do with the iPhone when not used as a phone.

Great, but it didn't work today at McDonald's in France. I got the WiFi with a long page full of rules/regulation from the ISP METEOR NETWORKS that i was supposed to AGREE (J'Accepte).

The trouble was that there was no way to do it. My 2G iPhone would not respond to my tapping over j'accepte. Any hints or help? Thanks
