Ok me and my mom want the IPhone 3G. But how do you set a text tone for it? And can you text side ways on it? Or just in the up position?

you can text on landscape or portrait mode… you choice on the Iphone 3GS or Iphone 3G with 3.0 OS update…
as the the text tones, you can choose you incoming text tone like any other cell phone…
tap Settings, Tap Sounds, Tap the “New text message” field, Tap the desired ringtone you want, Tap Sounds AGAIN, you ringotne should now be labeled next to “New text message” field
Go to
Settings > Sounds > New Text Message
(on a non-jailbroken iPhone you only have the options of:
-Tri-tone (which you may recognize from iTunes)
-Chime
-Glass
-Horn
-Bell
-Electronic)
As of the new 3.0 software you can text in landscape (up position) as well as in portrait (side ways) modes.
The only way you can set your own ringtone for texts is if you jailbreak. Not sure why Apple never allowed people to set text tones.
And with the new 3.0 software, you can use the iPhone’s landscape keyboard to text.
EDIT: You can change your text tone, but only to one of 6 sounds Apple put on the device themselves. What I meant is that you can’t use your own ringtones.
The tones will all be under settings and sounds. With the 3.0 software you can text in landscape. If you have an apple store near you stop in, they are very helpful.
You can text sideways with the 3.0 software update! Text tone you go to settings-sounds-new text message-and select tone!
