   yeah, theres an info option in the setting that says how much space there is and available ect. the 3g is the cheaper version , plastic instead of aluminum yadda yadda yadda

   The backing is a plastic finish instead of aluminum; that’s the easiest way to tell. Unless you are buying it from somewhere other than an Apple Store or AT&T store (which I strongly suggest you don’t), they are no longer selling the EDGE only (or the original) iPhones.

   if your talking about an iphone 3g, then thats easy because the backs are different. and also, if you go to the homepage you know its an iphone 3g if it has an app store.

   they both are physically the same but the 3G iphone would have more space…
   you can check settings and it will show you how much G you have on your iphone

   the backside of the 3G iPhone is black
   but of the other one it is silver
   3G is more slimmer

    Very good question.
    1. Make sure that iPhone is out of the case.
    if back is white aluminum, it is 2G
    2. Go to to look at actual pictures of iPhone 3Ghttp://www.apple.com/iphone/gallery/ you can see iPHone from every angle.
    Also, you have to be careful, if you are buying iPhone 3G and person told you that it is unlocked (i.e. works on another another network, not ATT if you are in US) iPhone 3G has not been unlocked as of this time.
    It has been jailbroken but not unlocked.
